Kann mein Kind durch Fernsehen eine Sprache lernen?
*What's this episode about?* My guest today is Dr. Amra Havkić. Originally from Bosnia, she studied German Studies and German as a Foreign and Second Language and recently published her doctoral dissertation. The impetus for her research was personal: Her younger brother learned German as a small child in Bosnia simply by watching German-language television, even though German was hardly spoken in the family anymore. For her study, Amra examined 21 children in Bosnia who watched German television and compared their language skills with those of children who only learned German in school. The result: The children who watched television performed significantly better in all tests. We discuss the three most important factors, Amra's own daughter, who learned English this way, the limitations of television input, and the importance of relationships, which remain crucial and cannot be replaced by a screen. For her study, Amra examined 21 children in Bosnia who watched German television and compared their language skills with those of children who only learned German in school. *What you'll take away from this episode:* What language acquisition through television is all about Why Amra's children who watched television performed better than those who learned exclusively in school Where the limits of television input lie Why screen time isn't inherently bad Why genuine relationships and interaction are irreplaceable How you can strategically use media as additional input in another language Amra's dissertation, "Television Children: A Multi-Method Study on Uncontrolled L2 Acquisition through Audiovisual Media," has been open access and available for free download since May 2026. ... *QUICK LINKS* Amra on Instagram: / daz.wischenforschung Amra on LinkedIn: / amra-havki%c4%87-b2977083 Email [email protected] Apply for the LingFLoWS® training: https://dielinguistin.at/bewerbung For the €0 Masterclass: https://dielinguistin.at/masterclass Consistently Multilingual – The Workshop: https://dielinguistin.at/konsequent-m...
