Navies, Seapower and the Trireme - Athens and Sparta Released this week!

Tomorrow - 23rd April 2026 - sees the UK release of my latest non fiction book, Athens and Sparta. The rivalry that shaped Ancient Greece. In the meantime, I thought that we would take a look at the trireme, the most important warship of the fifth century BC, and start to think about the nature of seapower and why its navy allowed the Athenians to grow so powerful. Suspect that we will return to this them in the future. For those wanting to read more deeply, J. Morrison, J. Coates & B. Rankov, The Athenian Trireme. the History and Reconstruction of an ancient Greek Warship (2nd ed, 2000) and B. Rankov (ed), The Trireme Olympias: The Final Report (2012) are highly recommended.
