1982 Falklands War Day by Day (PART 1/2) | Archive Footage Documentary
1982 Falklands War Day by Day | PART 1/2 A day-by-day account of the Falklands War, made using frontline combat footage filmed by news crews embedded with the British task force and political reporting from London, Buenos Aires and Washington. In early 1982, the Falkland Islands, a remote British territory in the South Atlantic, became the focal point of a long-standing dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom. On 2 April 1982, Argentine forces invaded and occupied the Falkland Islands, claiming sovereignty over the territory known in Argentina as las Islas Malvinas. The British government, led by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, condemned the invasion and swiftly assembled a naval task force to retake the islands. The conflict lasted 74 days, claimed 907 lives, and saw fierce battles at sea, in the air, and on land. Presented here is the first of two compilations covering the conflict and its aftermath. This first instalment covers events from Argentina's invasion of the Falklands on 2 April 1982 to the first landing of British forces at San Carlos Bay on 21 May 1982. 00:00:00 Introduction 00:03:57 Invasion (29 March – 2 April) 00:10:42 Interview with Foreign Secretary Lord Carrington and Defence Secretary John Nott (2 April) 00:18:19 Task force departs (5 April) 00:20:55 View from Buenos Aires 00:22:09 Statement by Labour Party leader Michael Foot 00:23:42 Interview with US President Ronald Reagan 00:27:04 Interview with British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher 00:35:23 Interview with UK Ambassador to US Sir Nicholas Henderson 00:38:29 Canberra requisitioned (7 April) 00:40:52 American reaction 00:42:04 US Secretary of State Alexander Haig in UK (8 April) 00:44:19 Argentinian reaction 00:47:19 Canberra departs (9 April) 00:48:32 Haig press conference 00:49:09 Training on Canberra (10 April) 00:51:39 Blockade of Falklands begins (12 April) 00:53:24 Alexander Haig and UK Foreign Secretary Francis Pym press conference (12 April) 00:57:03 View from Buenos Aires 00:58:11 Haig returns to Washington (13 April) 01:00:28 Resupplying Canberra (15 April) 01:01:44 View from Washington 01:03:47 First pictures of life aboard HMS Hermes - Harriers and Sea Kings (17 April) 01:10:03 Marine POWs arrive in Montevideo, Uruguay (18 April) 01:11:17 Comparison of Argentine and British forces 01:15:12 Canberra stops at Freetown 01:16:52 Michael Nicholson reports from HMS Hermes (19 April) 01:18:40 Fire drills on Canberra (20 April) 01:21:34 Haig and Thatcher in London (21 April) 01:22:53 View from Argentina 01:24:09 Canberra hospital prepared 01:25:37 Stewart Menaul on retaking South Georgia 01:28:03 Francis Pym in Washington (22–24 April) 01:34:31 South Georgia recaptured – Margaret Thatcher and John Nott press conference (25 April) 01:36:54 Argentine foreign minister Costa Mendez and Haig at the OAS (Organisation of American States) 01:38:45 Falkland Marines join the Canberra (26 April) 01:40:11 Costa Mendez interview 01:42:29 Life aboard HMS Antelope (27 April) 01:46:25 Trevor McDonald report from United Nations (28 April) 01:47:15 Exclusion zone 01:50:25 Life aboard RFA Sir Percivale (30 April) 01:51:56 Francis Pym press conference 01:52:31 Mike Nicholson reports from Hermes - first air raids on Falkland Islands (1 May) 01:58:04 Ian McDonald (MOD) reports first raids on Falklands (2 May) 02:02:07 View from Washington 02:03:23 Sinking of the ARA General Belgrano (News at Ten programme, 3 May) 02:13:53 Attack on HMS Sheffield (Nicholson report, 4 May) 02:24:23 Attack on HMS Sheffield (News at Ten, 4 May) 02:33:46 Reactions to attack on HMS Sheffield (5–6 May) 02:43:14 Reports from HMS Hermes (7–8 May) 02:45:20 Interview with Jorge Hugo Herrera Vegas, spokesman for the Argentine Mission at the UN (12 May) 02:49:54 View from Buenos Aires (15 May) 02:51:24 London peace march (16 May) 02:52:23 Mike Nicholson reports raids on Pebble Island (16 May) 02:57:08 Thatcher's day (19 May) 03:00:25 Breakdown at the UN (19–20 May) 03:04:12 Ian McDonald announces re-invasion of the Falkland Islands (21 May) 03:06:53 British forces land at San Carlos Bay (21 May) #Falklands #FalklandsWar #FalklandIslands #LasIslasMalvinas #Warfare #ModernWarfare #Arentina #Galtieri #Thatcher #Frontline #CombatFootage #History #MilitaryHistory #BritishArmy #RoyalMarines #Conflict To search the ITN Archive collection on Getty Images, follow the link below: https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/footage... 🎥 Subscribe to our YouTube channel (tap the bell icon and stay up to date with all the latest ITN Archive videos!) - / @frontlinebyitn 🎥 Follow us on Twitter - / itnarchive 🎥 Like us on Facebook - / itnarchiveitnp 🎥 Check out our TikTok - / itnarchive1955
