A strapiombo sul GHIACCIAIO. Trekking spettacolare in Alta Val Formazza

July 12, 2026. On this hike, I'll take you to the Alta Val Formazza, to a 3,044-meter peak overlooking the Gries Glacier. The Punta dei Camosci, or Bättelmatthorn, is a ridge on the border between Italy and Switzerland. It's a sheer, panoramic peak. Starting from Riale, at 1,718 meters, you skirt Lake Morasco, climb to the Piana del Bettelmat on a good trail, and from there you reach the Gries Pass, at 2,469 meters, on the Swiss border. There's a bivouac here, and you can visit two small lakes at the foot of the glacier. From this point, the hike becomes more challenging. Over scree-filled, very steep terrain, you reach the 3,044-meter summit, along some very exposed sections. This is a trek for experienced hikers that requires sure-footedness and a head for heights. The effort will be rewarded with a breathtaking 360-degree view of the glacier and Mount Arbola. For the return journey, we make a loop: we take the exposed Castiglioni trail, equipped with chains, to reach the Piana dei Camosci and the Città di Busto refuge. After a stop at the refuge, we finally return to Morasco and from there, a short drive to Riale.
