LA REGINA DELLA VAL FORMAZZA: PUNTA D'ARBOLA DA DEVERO.

Hike on August 18, 2023. We're attempting the most challenging hike of the year: we're climbing to the summit of Arbola, at 3,235 m above sea level. We'll depart from Devero at first light. The route from Devero is long but very varied and rewarding. The landscape is constantly changing, within a Natural Park, where nature remains pristine. We pass by Crampiolo Alp, Devero Lake, Pianboglio Lake, and Forno Inferiore Alp at 2,222 m. Here, the renowned BETTELMATT cheese is produced by the Albrun farm, owned by the Matli family for several generations. Bettelmatt can only be produced in seven clearly defined mountain pastures: Forno Alp, Poyala Alp, Vannino Alp, Sangiatto Alp, Bettelmatt Alp, Regina Alp, and Kastel Alp; Located in the Antigorio and Formazza valleys at an altitude ranging from 1,900 to 2,400 meters above sea level. The wild herbs present in these pastures are the main characteristic of these mountain pastures. The herbaceous species that grow at these altitudes, during the short summer months, are the source of the aromas and flavors found in the prized cheese; the most important of these herbs is the "Ligusticum Mutellina," also known as "Mottolina or Mutellina herb." We will therefore have the immense pleasure of observing the various milk processing operations and of being guests of these wonderful people. The climb to the summit is alpine-style. There are exposed sections, with no safety features. All of this takes place on unstable scree, left by disappearing glaciers. There are steep gradients and few reference marks. This is therefore a challenging route, requiring constant attention. Stunning views from the summit of this mountain, considered "the queen of the Formazza Valley."
