In October, when the autumn leaves begin to turn crimson, let's hear the heartwarming stories of mountaineers. ■ Jangteomok Mountain Lodge: The Final Rest Stop for the Summit Jirisan, designated as Korea's first national park, is a popular hiking destination year-round, boasting a constantly changing natural landscape. Jangteomok Mountain Lodge is located just 1.7 kilometers below Cheonwangbong Peak, Jirisan's summit. With numerous trails branching out and guarding the paths to the summit, Jangteomok is one of the most popular hikers' destinations on Jirisan Mountain. The name "Jangteomok" (meaning "market") derives from the fact that people from Sicheon-myeon, Sancheong-gun and Macheon-myeon, Hamyang-gun, once held a market here for bartering. Today, it's a daily market not only for those traversing the Jirisan ridge but also for hikers seeking to witness the sunrise and beautiful scenery of Cheonwangbong Peak. ■ Climbing the Undyingly Dreamed Jangteomok Every mountain enthusiast dreams of hiking Jangteomok at least once. Kim Hyeong-su, whose legs are impaired by polio, also dreamed of climbing Jangteomok at least once in his life. Known for its difficulty even for the most physically fit, he trained for over a month before embarking on his hike. Just seven hours after setting off, he reached Jangteomok, the threshold of the summit. That's more than twice the time it takes for most hikers. He endured back-breaking pain as he climbed Jangteomok. What does this place mean to him? As he heads back toward Cheonwangbong Peak, we explore his arduous journey to reach the summit of Jirisan, a dream come true. ■ A Bivouac Hiking Night Under the Stars A couple with two children and a backpack as big as a house enter Jangteomok. This is Jina's third trip to Jirisan this year. Nine-year-old Jina's tenth time on the mountain. She began climbing the challenging mountain, carried on her father's back, at the age of four. When traveling with her children, the couple always carries bivouac (camping without a tent) gear in case they can't sleep at the mountain lodge. As the sun sets, the family prepares for bivouac, setting up sleeping bags outside the lodge. We join them in their arduous journey, forgoing the warmth of the mountain lodge for a night on Jirisan. ■ A British Couple Who Love Korean Mountains, Carrying a Yellow Pot On the afternoon of the 11th, a foreign couple carrying a yellow pot in their backpack arrived at Jangteomok Mountain Lodge. Mr. and Mrs. Ray from New York. They came here because they loved the mountains, having even picked up trash along the trail. They cook rice with the rice they brought in a large pot and enjoy the natural mingling with other hikers. Even without a common language barrier, a simple greeting can make anyone a friend. Isn't this the true charm of mountains? ■ Jirisan, captured in a single photo Jirisan, which displays tens of millions of different faces every season and every hour, captivates photographers. Park Gyun-cheol has been taking mountain photos as a hobby for 15 years. Despite being over 60 years old, he still visits this mountain every week, carrying a backpack weighing over 30kg. Capturing a single perfect photo in this ever-changing mountain is as difficult as picking a star from the sky. "If I take a good picture every time I climb, the climb loses its charm..." He knows that taking pictures of mountains is sometimes a foolish act, requiring him to sleep in the mountain lodge kitchen and spend long hours aimlessly. But faced with nature's myriad faces, he picks up his camera again and gazes silently at the mountain, as if reflecting on his life. ■ Two Sisters Talk About Life Through the Mountain Inside the shelter, among the resting hikers, two sisters catch the eye, chatting affectionately. Kim Jeong-ja (64), from Seoul, and Kim Jeong-hee (59), from Chuncheon. While descending, they often think of the mountain as a last resort, but after ten days, they find themselves drawn back to it. For the sisters, Jirisan is the perfect place to share their innermost thoughts. During their three-day, two-night walk along the long ridge, they unpack the stories they've been holding dear: their children, their husbands, and even their mother, whom they've long since lost. Some people bustle from the crack of dawn to catch the sunrise, while others enjoy a leisurely hike.
