It's 227 km from Incheon, but only 17 km from Jangsan Cape in Hwanghae Province. Baengnyeong Island is so close to North Korea that there's a joke that says it gets one centimeter closer to North Korea on a clear day. This is a land where first-generation displaced people shed tears over their homeland, just a short distance away, and second-generation displaced people, who grew up watching their parents, have lived, yearning for their homeland just across the sea. It's been 72 hours on Baengnyeong Island, a time of mounting longing for those who, though their hometown is close by, cannot cross the sea. ◆"My hometown... my daughter..." The longing builds. Over 60 years ago, grandmother Choi Eung-pal, who was traveling between Jangyeon County in Hwanghae Province and Baengnyeong Island across the sea, was suddenly unable to return home due to the outbreak of the Korean War. She couldn't leave Baengnyeong Island, which bordered North Korea, because of her four-year-old daughter who remained behind. It's only a 30-minute ride by speedboat, but the grandmother can't cross the sea to her daughter's hometown. Her husband, a civil servant, was transferred to another region, but he resigned to remain on Baengnyeong Island, where he could still see his hometown. He longed for his daughter and his hometown, and he died. 64 years ago, now that her daughter is 68, the grandmother only remembers her four-year-old daughter, and the fact that she hasn't left behind even a single photograph still agonizes her heart. Every time she sends her remaining children to school or arranges for their marriage, she yearns for her daughter, who remains in her hometown. Recently, the grandmother is filled with hope that she will be reunited with her daughter through the reunion of separated families, which resumed after a three-year hiatus. Though much time has passed, this longing continues to build with each passing day. ◆Father's Hometown Beyond the Sea: A Longing for It Among the residents of Baengnyeong Island, many are displaced persons and second-generation displaced persons whose hometown lies beyond the impassable sea. Kang Jin-seop, the youngest captain of Gobong Port, the closest port to North Korea. His father's hometown lies within arm's reach, but Kang Jin-seop cannot cross the sea. In the sea, filled with his father's longing, Chinese boats appear, sweeping away the fish. Because of the division, the sea has brought longing to his father and practical hardship to his son. The son simply wishes for unification to come soon.
