Guto Miguel stunned Nick Kyrgios 3-2 in quarters (21-12, 15-10, 13-16, 15-21, 2-0 in Sudden Death) on his tour debut, saving six quarter points across the match before closing it out in front of his home crowd. The 17-year-old Brazilian raced through the first quarter 21-12 and added the second 15-10, but Kyrgios fired back to win the third 16-13 and the fourth 21-15, saving three quarter points in each to level the match. Guto Miguel held firm in Sudden Death, winning it 2-0 at 100 percent on serve and return, to beat the former Wimbledon finalist over 55 minutes. The teenager out-hit Kyrgios 15 winners to 11, made fewer unforced errors and outscored him 66-59 overall, in his first appearance on the big stage of a professional singles event, played in front of his home crowd at the Maracanãzinho.
