"Life Becomes Immortal When It Ends..." | The Story of Ana Mendieta & Carl Andre | PART 1

In September of 1985, Ana Mendieta was ready to start fresh in her life. The up-and-coming artist had set up some exciting plans to show her work, she had received her cozy New York sublet back from an errant tenant - and she was setting herself up to divorce her cheating husband of only 7 months, famed Minimalist sculptor Carl Andre. Her friends and family knew she was excited about moving forward – which made the horrifying news of September 8, 1985 all the more devastating: Ana had committed suicide by jumping out of the widow of the high-rise apartment of her husband, Carl, falling over 30 stories to her death. Or . . . did she? Those who knew Ana disputed Carl’s initial report that Ana jumped, citing her renewed zest for her life and career – plus a near debilitating fear of heights. The question became: was Ana’s tragic death suicide, an accident . . . Or murder? In this two-part series on the story of Ana Mendieta and Carl Andre, we will look at their art, their relationship, who they were as people, and the terrible crime and aftermath that would forever link Ana’s name to Carl’s instead of to her deeply personal artwork. Today in part 1, we will cover Ana and Carl’s lives and careers, and their relationship leading up to September of 1985. Next week, Part 2 will focus on Ana’s death, the investigation, the trial of Carl Andre, and the aftermath, including Ana’s lasting legacy and what Carl said the only time he spoke publicly about the death of Ana – over 20 years later.
