Turtucaia: locul pe care orice român ar trebui să-l cunoască

Just a few kilometers from Romania, on the Bulgarian bank of the Danube, there is a city about which very little has been written, but which decisively influenced the history of the region and even the destiny of Romania. In this documentary we arrive in Turtucaia (Tutrakan), the ancient Roman fortress of Transmarisca, the place where empires, armies and cultures met for almost two millennia. Together with Andrei Ionel Bergeș and Iulian Vasiliu we discover the story of a city that belonged to the Romans, the First Bulgarian Kingdom, the Byzantine Empire and the Ottoman Empire, only to later become part of Romania during the Quadrilateral period and, subsequently, return to Bulgaria. We follow the footsteps of the ancient Roman fortress of Transmarisca and find out why this place represented one of the most important defense points of the Danube limes. We discuss the Danube as the border of the Roman Empire, Aurelian Dacia and the strategic role that this area had throughout history. The documentary then follows the transformations that Turtucaia went through in the Middle Ages, explaining the origin of the name Tutrakan, Slavic and Bulgarian influences, Ottoman domination and the Bulgarian national revival in the 19th century, a period in which many of the historical buildings that are still preserved today were built. An important chapter is dedicated to the Quadrilateral and the context in which southern Dobrogea entered the Romanian administration after the Second Balkan War. We talk about the political and military reasons that changed the borders, about the life of the Romanians in this province and about the return of the territory to Bulgaria in 1940. One of the most impressive moments of the documentary is the presentation of the Battle of Turtucaia in September 1916, considered by many historians to be one of the most painful defeats suffered by the Romanian army during World War I. The causes of the military disaster, the serious problems of organization and communication, the wrong decisions made on the front and how these events changed the course of the Romanian campaign are analyzed. We visit the impressive Memorial of the Heroes of Turtucaia, where Romanian, Bulgarian and German soldiers rest together, discussing the memory of the war and how history is viewed today by the two countries. In addition to military history, the documentary also captures the charm of the city today. We discover the fishing district, traditional houses built in the Bulgarian Renaissance style, the Church of Saint Nicholas, local museums and the only Danube Fishing Museum in Bulgaria, where we learn how fishing on the Danube has been practiced since Antiquity to the present day. Throughout the documentary, numerous lesser-known stories and events are presented: from the campaigns of General Suvorov and the Russian-Turkish conflicts, to the cholera epidemic that claimed more victims than the actual battles during the Balkan Wars. You will also hear impressive accounts of Romanian soldiers who miraculously survived and episodes that illustrate how dramatic history can become when the wrong decisions are made on the battlefield. This is not just a documentary about a city in Bulgaria, but an incursion into an essential page in the history of Romania and the Balkans, a journey through places where every street, every building and every monument preserves the memory of events that changed the destinies of tens of thousands of people.
