Through the Herculane Project, a nationally and internationally recognized initiative, Oana Chirilă and her team have been fighting for years to save the built heritage of Băile Herculane. A resort with almost two millennia of history, appreciated since Roman times, later becoming one of the most elegant spa destinations of the Habsburg Empire and rightly called the "Pearl of Europe". In this documentary, I invite you to discover the true story of Băile Herculane, beyond the images that usually appear in the press. Together with **Oana Chirilă**, one of the people who dedicated years of their lives to saving the resort's heritage, we walk step by step through the most important places full of history and enter a space where very few people have had access: the legendary Băile Neptun. You will learn how this imperial resort was born, why Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Sissi chose to come here for treatment, how the entire architectural ensemble was designed according to the concept of "Health and Happiness" and why Băile Herculane was once considered one of the most modern spa centers in Europe. We start from the Central Park and discover the story of the Casino, the Decebal Hotel, the Villa Elisabeta, the place where Empress Sissi was hosted, the Stone Bridge – the first bridge built in a curve and in an arc in Europe –, Hercules Square, the old imperial baths and the thermal springs that made the resort famous throughout Europe. The documentary captures numerous lesser-known historical information: • the transformation of the old settlement into an imperial resort intended for the European aristocracy; • the role of Viennese architects and the concept of the “garden city” in the development of the resort; • the legends of the underground tunnels used by the imperial family; • the stories about Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Sissi; • the sulfur springs and therapeutic properties that made Herculaneum famous; • the impressive system of colonnades and connections between hotels, baths and the casino; • the first hydraulic lift in Romania and numerous other technical firsts of the era. The focal point of the documentary, however, is the visit inside the Neptune Baths, one of the most important spa monuments in Romania. We enter the building and discover the imperial bathtubs in which members of the imperial family received treatment, the cabins dedicated to Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Sissi, the thermal pool, the majolica fountain, the original marble elements and numerous architectural details that still impress after almost 140 years. At the same time, the documentary also shows the painful reality of the monument: the infiltrations, the degradation caused by the passage of time, the unfortunate interventions during the communist period and the dangers faced by this monumental building. You will see how fragile certain areas are and why access to the interior is strictly controlled, precisely to protect the lives of visitors and the heritage.
