Celebrating 200 Years of Rail Travel: The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway - Autumn Gala - 2025

A short trip to the Lynton and Barnstaple Steam Railway for their annual and highly popular Autumn Gala. The line is just 0.9 miles long, running between Woody Bay Station, and Killington Lane, with no intermediate stops. Relaid along the former narrow gauge branch line from Barnstaple to just outside Lynton, the theme of the gala was Railway 200, celebrating 200 years of rail travel. Originally closed in 1935, a section was relaid and opened in 2004, and along with a short extension in 2006, it gives us the line we see today. The Masterplan is to see the line extended as far as possible, although plans are on hold following a recent planning application being rejected. Visiting for the weekend included: Kerr Stuart Wren Class ‘Peter Pan’, De Winton ‘Chaloner’, Planet locomotive ‘Boothby’, North Dorset Locomotive Work 0-4-2T 'Faith', along with the home fleet, Baldwin 762 ‘Lyn’, Bagnell 2819 ‘ Sir George Newnes’, Kerr Stuart 2451 ‘Axe’, D2393 ‘Pilton’, D6652, D6660 ‘Heddon Hall’.
