When the Nazis came to power in Germany during the early 1930s, they sought to modernize the armed forces with more modern military equipment. The founding of the Luftwaffe was one of the main priorities of the new regime. Massive amounts of resources were channeled into the construction of a great number of airfields and other forms of infrastructure necessary for the air force. In addition, many new military aircraft designs, including fighters, were requested. Surprisingly, a small and generally unknown manufacturer, which was under the leadership of Willy Messerschmitt, would win the single-engine fighter competition with the Bf 109 design.
