The All-Metal Revolution | Junkers D.I
When people think of German aviation innovation, their minds usually jump to the jet fighters of the Second World War. Yet a generation earlier, during the First World War, Germany achieved a different but equally significant breakthrough: the construction of the world’s first operational all-metal aircraft. The man behind the metal was none other than Hugo Junkers himself. Deciding that the future of aerial warfare shouldn't be built out of wood and fabric, he set out to create a series of increasingly complex all-metal planes, culminating with the Junkers D.I. The corrugated metalwork of this new fighter revolutionized structural strength and would become a lasting hallmark of Junkers aircraft to come.
