3 days / 37 miles - Paddling a Remote River in Minnesota

This was one of our best canoe trips to date! On this route, we travel the upper section of the Cloquet River in Minnesota from Indian Lake down to Island Lake. 37 river miles long with a number of designated rapids ranging from class I-III. We had virtually no experience running rapids in a canoe, but I think we did pretty good and we had so much fun! It was the first weekend in the 70's here in northern MN and we still didn't see a single other person out on the river. The Cloquet ranged in diversity from beginning to end. The start of the river was narrow and windy, and it gradually got wider as we neared Island lake. Every mile seemed to change from marshy swamp to grassy woodland, to towering white pine and canadian shield. The water changed from calm, to mild unmarked rapids, to full blown marked rapids, and back to calm over and over again. The amount of moose tracks was surprising, though we didn't get a chance to see the elusive Minnesota Moose. We saw various bird species, beavers, snakes, river otters, and other signs of wildlife. 00:00-7:09 Day 1 – Indian Lake to Camp 1 7:10-20:03 Day 2 – Camp 1 to Camp 2 20:04-24:29 Day 3 – Camp 2 to Island Lake 24:09-24:39 – Thank You!
