RODOLFO HERRERO: HE SWORE LOYALTY TO CARRANZA THAT AFTERNOON — AND THAT SAME NIGHT HE ORDERED HIM KILLED Rodolfo Herrero was the general who assassinated President Venustiano Carranza in Tlaxcalantongo, Puebla, in the early morning of May 21, 1920. A former soldier under Porfirio Díaz and a rebel supporter of José María Pelaec, he received amnesty from Carranza weeks before the crime, swore loyalty to him, and led him to the hut where his men murdered him. He was interrogated, released, and never tried. He died at the age of 83 in Monterrey. The most unpunished crime of the Mexican Revolution.
