FRANCISCO SERRANO: LE SALVÓ LA VIDA A OBREGÓN — Y OBREGÓN LO FUSILÓ EN UNA CARRETERA
FRANCISCO SERRANO: HE SAVED OBREGÓN'S LIFE — AND OBREGÓN HAD HIM EXECUTED ON THE SIDE OF A HIGHWAY In 1914, he saved the life of the most powerful man in Mexico when Pancho Villa wanted to have him executed. He fought alongside him for 15 years. He was his Secretary of War. His brother-in-law. His shadow in every battle. When he dared to run against him for the presidency, he was arrested without evidence, bound with barbed wire, and executed along with 13 companions on the side of a highway in Morelos. That night, Álvaro Obregón went to the hospital to see the body of his best friend, nudged it with his foot, and said, "Oh, Pancho, look what they did to you." The book that told this story was censored in Mexico. The film based on that book was confiscated by the army and could not be shown for 30 years. Its director died without ever seeing it on screen. And at kilometer 47 of the old highway to Cuernavaca, 14 iron crosses have stood for almost 100 years, marking the exact spot where the Mexican Revolution killed the man who defended his principles.
