This rough blue nobby opal looked unassuming from the outside but the moment I shone a light through it, I knew something special was hiding inside. A dark body, no potch, and glimpses of blue and green hinting at what could be a rare black crystal. I had a feeling. I just didn't know how good it was going to get. What came out of this gem was beyond anything I imagined. Flagstone and chaff pattern, deep 3D blue and green color in a N1 black body tone — and all from a piece I almost didn't think twice about. This is exactly why I love cutting rough opal. You never truly know until the wheel starts turning. This nobby came from the same pocket as another crystal opal I cut a few weeks back that also blew our expectations. There's something about this field that just keeps delivering. The final gem came in at just over 10 carats and with that unique play-of-color, we're looking at around $18,000. Not bad for a piece that had no right being this good!
