In this video, I cut one of the most exciting pieces of rough I've had in a long time — a glassy Lightning Ridge crystal opal with a white cap and what I suspected to be a hidden layer of orange fire underneath. From the first pass on the wheel to the final polish, watch as this rough opal transforms into a stunning 3.18-carat double-sided crystal with green, blue, orange, and hints of purple — almost exactly what I predicted before I even started cutting. It's a little smaller than I hoped thanks to some stubborn sand spots, but at $3–4K per carat, this one more than delivered.
