Today I’m cutting a 300 carat piece of seam opal from Lightning Ridge, and this one is seriously interesting. The rough shows a huge purple colour bar running right around the stone, which is something you don’t see very often. At first glance it looks incredibly promising… but opal always has a way of surprising you. There are chips, sand, and possible cracks hiding inside this piece, and with opal like this you can’t see what’s really going on until the wheel starts grinding. Sometimes the colour gets better… and sometimes hidden faults appear exactly where you don’t want them. As I start opening the stone, the colour begins to show through — but so do a few worrying signs that could change everything. Will this giant piece turn into a beautiful gem… or will the hidden problems win? Cutting opal is always a mix of skill, patience, and a bit of luck, and this stone definitely tested all three.
