Leek Town's Full History, EP8, Into The Northern Premier League

Leek Town enter the Northern Premier League Division One in nineteen eighty-seven and finish third in each of their first two seasons — eighty-five points in the second, with a one-point deduction, and still not enough for promotion. Dave Sutton arrives from Crewe Alexandra in July nineteen eighty-seven, the first of a generation of players who would define the Baker era. The squad Baker builds is organised, collective, and genuinely difficult to beat, finishing third in both seasons against competition that includes Bishop Auckland and Colne Dynamoes, who win the nineteen eighty-eight to eighty-nine title with ninety-eight points. Two near-misses. A one-point deduction that stings without changing anything. And a summer of targeted work in nineteen eighty-nine that sharpens the blade for what is coming.
