Hunting for a Lost Giant! | Cowthorpe Oak, River Nidd & Church Tour

We’ve arrived in the historic village of Cowthorpe for Part Two of our journey—and it’s time to tick off some big boxes for the Historic County Bingo Challenge! 📜🎲 Our first stop is the fascinating St Michael’s Church, a Grade I listed gem built between 1456 and 1458 by Sir Bryan Roucliffe. With its massive, thick-walled western tower, the architecture looks more like a medieval castle fortification or a military gatehouse than a traditional village church! 🏰⛪ From there, we venture into the field directly behind the church to hunt for the exact spot where the legendary Cowthorpe Oak once stood. Although this ancient champion (once thought to be Europe's oldest tree) fell in 1951, standing in the field where its massive canopy once spread is incredibly atmospheric. Next, we take a short, peaceful walk down to the beautiful banks of the River Nidd, looking across the water toward the neighboring village of Hunsingore. 🌊🌾 Before we pack up and head home, we make one final stop at the village centre to check out the classic red telephone box, which the community has brilliantly repurposed into a thriving local library! 📞📚 Histpric County Bingo Ticks Today (West Riding):✅ Grade I Listed Church (St Michael's)✅ The River Nidd✅ Iconic Red Telephone Box / Library✅ ❌ Unfortunately, we couldn't tick off "Oldest Living Tree in the County" today.
