Britain's most complete Anglo Saxon church? 675AD - Escomb, County Durham

One of the three oldest surviving churches from the Anglo Saxon period in Britain, Escomb is widely considered the most complete survival, and is unique in that it has the oldest in-situ Sundial in Britain and an idiosyncratic type of long and short work quoins along with further distinctive Anglo Saxon architecture and re-used Roman masonry from the nearby cavalry fort of Binchester. ADDENDUM: Carboniferous Frosterley Marble was formed 325 million years ago - not 180 million, as stated in the video. Many thanks to Church Warden, Susan for her hospitality. 00:00 Intro 01:09 Escomb churchyard & context 02:14 Architectural layout 02:51 Roman masonry 03:53 Anglian windows 04:24 Roman inscriptions 05:16 Anglo Saxon architecture 05:59 Oldest in-situ sundial in Britain 07:27 Church interior 08:00 Plasterwork 08:38 Limewashed churches 09:30 Windows & Roman inscription 10:20 Roman Chancel Arch 12:02 Consecration Cross 12:30 Frosterley Marble 14:08 Anglo Saxon Cross 14:34 Palm Frond / Tree of Life 15:15 Anglo Saxon Compass Knot-work 16:40 Outro
