Unlike the thunder and lightning that accompanied Moses, Elijah experienced: A Great Wind that tore the mountains apart. An Earthquake that shook the very foundations of the Sinai. A Raging Fire that lit up the desert night. The scripture notes that God was not in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire. Instead, it was only in the "still small voice"—a gentle whisper—that Elijah finally recognized the Divine presence. He stepped to the mouth of the cave, covering his face in awe. At this spot, which you visited, the focus shifted from the external power of the Law to the internal guidance of the Spirit. The Sacred Landscape of the Sinai Peninsula The traditional Mount Sinai in Egypt offers a unique physical testimony to these events. The "Plateau of Elijah" (or the Plain of the Cypress) sits just below the main summit, home to an ancient cypress tree and a small chapel dedicated to the Prophet.
