Today we climbed Mount Sinai, the place where Moses received the Tablets of the Covenant twice, and where God revealed Himself to him again. The mountain rises to about 2200 meters, which is roughly 7218 feet above sea level. We began the journey riding camels for the first part, and then continued on foot, climbing about 750 steep steps to reach the summit. At the top, we were rewarded with a breathtaking view of the surrounding Sinai mountains. On the summit there is a small chapel marking the place where Moses is believed to have stood, a cave associated with God’s revelation to him, and also a mosque connected in Islamic tradition to the story of Al Buraq, the miraculous creature linked to the journey to Al Aqsa Mosque. The spiritual connection to God in this place is truly powerful. Mount Sinai is one of the most sacred mountains in the world. In Judaism, it is the site of the giving of the Law, the foundation of the covenant between God and the people of Israel. In Christianity, it represents divine revelation and the deep relationship between God and humanity. In Islam, it is also revered as a holy place connected to the story of Prophet Musa and the presence of God. Along the way, we also passed a place connected to the Prophet Elijah. According to tradition, Elijah fled to this mountain after defeating the prophets of Baal and fearing Queen Jezebel, the wife of King Ahab. Here, at Horeb, identified with Mount Sinai, Elijah encountered God not in fire or earthquake, but in a still, small voice. This moment became one of the most powerful expressions of quiet divine presence in religious tradition. Standing on this mountain, surrounded by silence and vast desert landscapes, it becomes easier to understand why these great biblical figures came here seeking God.
