The Mount of Olives Cemetery in Jerusalem is the most important and ancient Jewish cemetery in the world. For over three thousand years, Jews have chosen this hillside as their final resting place, overlooking the Temple Mount and the Old City. According to Jewish tradition, when the Messiah arrives and the resurrection of the dead begins, it will start here. Those buried on the Mount of Olives are believed to be the first to rise, which is why generations of Jews have longed to be buried in this sacred place. The cemetery holds more than 150,000 graves, including prophets, rabbis, and leaders from across Jewish history. Each stone tells a story, forming a powerful connection between the past, present, and future of the Jewish people. However, this holy place has also witnessed destruction. Between 1948 and 1967, when East Jerusalem was under Jordanian control, large parts of the cemetery were desecrated. Thousands of gravestones were destroyed, removed, or used for construction and even for paving roads and military facilities. It was a painful chapter that left deep scars on one of Judaism’s most sacred sites. Visiting the Mount of Olives today is not only a journey through Jewish history, but also an opportunity to understand burial traditions that have remained remarkably consistent for thousands of years. In Jewish burial, great respect is given to the human body. The deceased is buried as soon as possible, often on the same day. The body is carefully washed and purified in a ritual known as tahara, then wrapped in simple white shrouds called tachrichim. Traditionally, burial is done directly in the earth, without an elaborate coffin, symbolizing equality and a return to the soil. These ancient practices create a fascinating connection to the burial of Jesus. According to the Gospels, Jesus was buried quickly before the Sabbath, his body wrapped in linen cloths and placed in a tomb. The similarities reflect the shared Jewish context of the time and help us better understand the historical reality of his burial. Standing on the Mount of Olives, overlooking Jerusalem, one can feel the weight of faith, history, destruction, and hope. It is a place where belief in resurrection, respect for tradition, and the memory of the past all come together in one sacred landscape.
