The $1 Furniture Flip That Made Me Question Every Design Decision
In this video, I’m sharing one of my most challenging furniture flip and furniture refinishing projects yet. When I bought this oak veneer sideboard at auction for just one dollar, I knew I wanted to give it my signature two-tone furniture makeover. What I didn’t know was that this $1 furniture flip would have me questioning almost every design decision along the way. This vintage sideboard restoration became much more than a simple DIY furniture makeover. I rebuilt the base from scratch, modified the cabinet door, repaired years of wear, refinished the oak veneer, and questioned almost every design decision before finally committing to the two-tone look. Thankfully, the story doesn’t end there. In this full-length furniture makeover, I’ll take you through my complete furniture restoration process—from cleaning and prep, to modernizing dated details, to painting, staining, installing new hardware, and solving the inevitable mistakes that come up along the way. Whether you’re interested in furniture refinishing, DIY furniture restoration, furniture flipping, woodworking, or simply enjoy watching an old piece transformed into something beautiful again, I hope you’ll grab a coffee, settle in, and join me in the workshop. If you’re restoring an oak sideboard, refinishing oak veneer, or looking for modern furniture makeover ideas, I hope this project gives you plenty of inspiration—and maybe even a few ideas you can use in your own furniture flip. I’d love to know what you think… Did this makeover successfully modernize the piece, or would you have taken it in a different direction? 👇 Let me know in the comments! ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ CHAPTERS 00:00 – The $1 Sideboard 00:18 – Removing the 70s Details 03:51 – Cleaning Up Years of Wear 07:58 – Rethinking the Door Design 09:23 – Planning for the New Base 11:06 – Pocket Hole Joinery & Base Assembly 20:25 – Sanding Everything Smooth 24:58 – Uh Oh… It Still Looked Like the 70s 27:56 – Preparing for New Hardware 31:14 – Could Paint Save It? 33:08 – Chasing the Perfect Finish 34:52 – Attaching the New Oak Base & Committing to the Two-Tone Look 36:15 – Staining the Oak Top 36:52 – Choosing the Perfect Hardware 38:54 – One Last Hardware Mistake 40:55 – Did I Actually Modernize It? ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ PRODUCTS & MATERIALS USED Some of the links below are affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission if you make a purchase—at no additional cost to you.
