President George H.W. Bush Addresses the Nation as the Gulf War begins - January 16, 1991 9 p.m. EST
ABC News covers speech to the nation by President Bush from the Oval Office at 9 pm EST. The the attack on Iraq has begun to enforce the United Nations Security Council Resolution for Iraq to leave Kuwait. Bush says "A new world order" is being created where a world is run by the rule of law which allows a "credible United Nations" to "use its peacekeeping role to fulfill the vision of the founders of the UN" He says the goal of the US is "not the conquest of Iraq but rather the liberation of Kuwait." Senator John Warner, Republican of Virginia, is briefly interviewed after the speech.
