Mestre (eMMemodels Exclusive) Analogic At the dawn of the direct current electrification of the Italian railway network, at the end of the 1920s, the Italian State Railways needed new and powerful electric locomotives. As an evolution of the E.326, the high-performance E.428 locomotives were born, of which a total of 242 units were built between 1934 and 1943. The scope of use of these universal machines has ranged, over time, across the entire Peninsula. Typically, this group of locomotives is divided into three series: the first 122 machines had a central structure with two foreparts; followed by the second, semi-streamlined series (E.428 123 – 203), which was distinguished by its continuous construction, with driver’s cabs moved further forward. In the third series, the body and the front panels were joined in a streamlined shape. From 1934 until the entry into service of the E.646 in 1958, the E.428s were the most powerful FS locomotives in the FS fleet. The Group finally ended service in 1989. The model: Even in model form, the Italian E.428 is a real eye-catcher: the long body and the imposing carrying bogies characterise its overall appearance. These elements, together with the characteristic fronts, are perfectly reproduced by the PIKO model. The sides are characterised by fine rows of rivets and the flush-fitting driver's cab windows. A powerful five-pole motor is at work inside. Two precisely balanced flywheels improve the running characteristics and help to overcome small contact problems on the track. The models, equipped as standard with a digital decoder, offer various lighting functions. A PluX22 interface allows for the easy installation of a decoder. With the PIKO model, the second-series E.428 is available as a large-scale production model for the first time.
