In 1963, the German Reichsbahn commissioned the construction of a train in Görlitz intended to connect Europe. Elegant, fast, with up to 1000 hp per end car: the VT18.16, also known as the ICE of the East. As the Vindobona, it traveled from Berlin via Prague to Vienna; as the Neptun, it went all the way to Copenhagen; and as the Berliner, it even reached Malmö, crossing the Baltic Sea on a ferry. On board, it boasted swivel seats from the East German aircraft industry and a dining car that was second to none. 🚂 Today, a dedicated association is working to restore it to working order with over 5 million euros in investment. And KATO/Lemke has recreated this very train as the K30-733-1 model in HO scale.
