Who is God? What is God? Why is the God of the Orthodox Christians the one and only true God? Does God have a beginning? To whom does God appear? What is the essence of God? Does God exist? Is God a higher power? Are there many gods? Questions that many people have in the passage of their lives and all converge on the question“Who is God?”. According to St. John of Damascus, the word God comes from the Greek word “theo” which means run, this is why God is omnipresent. Also, the word God comes from the word “etho – ethin” which means burn, because God is a consuming fire. In the Epistle to the Hebrews of the Apostle Paul chapter 12, verse 29 we read that God is our consuming fire. Because our God is a fire that burns and annihilates every ruthless and disrespectful person. Also, the word God comes from the word “theome - theasthe” which means see, observe, because God sees everything. Many people when asked what God is, who God is, say that God is a higher power. And of course, this is not the case, because this higher power is something indefinite, vague. God cannot be an indefinite concept. From the activities that we humans receive from God upon us, we can understand that God is a spirit. Apart from the many qualities of God, the most important thing is that God is LOVE. He has not just love like us humans do, but He is Love. From this love springs the love that people have. God cannot be perceived and comprehended by human logic. Just as a human cannot measure all the stars in the sky or the grains of the sea sand, so too, he cannot comprehend through human logic how God is like.
