Why does the Lukashenko regime fear independent journalists? And what happens to someone after more than five years in prison? In this episode, Viktor Korbut, a journalist with Polish Radio and an expert on Eastern Europe, speaks with Kateryna Andreyeva, a journalist with the Belsat television channel and a former political prisoner. In 2020, she was detained during a live broadcast of a memorial event for Roman Bandarenka, a Minsk resident and activist in the "Square of Change" neighborhood community whose death became a symbol of the Lukashenko regime's violence against protesters. Andreyeva was later sentenced to eight years and three months in prison on charges of treason and espionage for Poland. Kateryna Andreyeva discusses her work as a journalist in Belarus after the 2020 protests, her arrest during a livestream, prison, prison colony, psychological pressure, political prisoners, and the price of choosing her profession. We also discuss her husband, independent journalist Igor Ilyash, who remains behind bars.
