The former Oratory of St Peter was built during the 11th century, earning it the title of the first parish church of Terzo (Italy). In 1108, an important Benedictine women's monastery arose, which expanded and influenced the affairs of the neighbouring parish of Terzo. The original bell was replaced in 1417 by a new, larger bell, which still stands on the bell tower. When the monastery was rebuilt, a bell was added in 1665 by a bell foundryman from Bergamo, who had cast the second one in 1655, before the church was closed. The three bells are in the scale of D minor. d'' - e'' - f'' During the week in which Saint Maurus is celebrated, the young people of the village go to play the ancient wooden keyboard, similar to that of a piano, where each key corresponds to a bell. The striking of the key causes the cable connected to the clapper to stretch and the bell tolls. The combination of the keys composes melodies as on a piano. In 1482, Pope Sixtus IV united the parish of Terzo with the Benedictine monastery, under the new dedication to St Michael the Archangel and St Peter the Apostle. The convent was enlarged in 1557, only to be closed as it fell into decay in 1655. On 3 December 1660, the superiors of the Benedictine order chose the land adjoining the church to reopen the abbey. It is not known when the church was consecrated, but it is certain that the high altar was privileged by Pope Benedict XIV in 1742. The French closed the monastery in 1798, selling all assets. The church remained closed and was reopened only years later, preserving the three original bells as an artistic historical asset.
