The daughter looked happy. But why did the father eventually break down? Alexander Pushkin's short story The Stationmaster goes beyond the tragedy of a father losing his daughter; it deals with the moment when one's role disappears from the life of a loved one. Samson Vyrin believes that his daughter, Dunya, was deceived by a young officer and taken to St. Petersburg. He walks a long way to rescue her. However, the Dunya he finally encounters is not wearing rags. She is sitting beside Minsky, adorned in splendid clothes and jewelry. Was what Vyrin saw his daughter's happiness? Or was it just a single scene that appeared to be happiness? Pushkin does not reveal Dunya's true feelings directly. We cannot know why she left, whether she truly loved Minsky, or if she was truly happy later on. All we know is a story seen by someone and heard by someone else. And at the end, a woman who appears to be Dunya visits her father's grave. However, the person to whom the love was to be conveyed had already vanished.
