재능만으로는 올라갈 수 없었던 청년의 비극|스탕달 『적과 흑』 줄거리와 결말
Can anyone with talent and ambition rise to greater heights? Stendhal's The Red and the Black is a novel depicting the rise and fall of Julien Sorel, a young man born the son of a lumber miller. Julien memorizes Latin, worships Napoleon, and dreams of a world far higher than the social status he was born into. However, in Restoration France, the paths available to a young man of humble origins were extremely limited. The path of the red military uniform was closed, and the only path remaining for him was the world of the black priestly cassock. He climbs higher and higher as he becomes a governess, a seminarian, and a secretary to an aristocrat. Yet, with every step he takes up the stairs, he is forced to wear a new face: an obedient governess, a devout seminarian, a competent secretary, and a cold-hearted lover. His love for Madame de Rênal, his relationship with Mathilde de La Mole, his ambition for aristocratic society, a single letter, and a shooting incident that took place in a church. All these events ultimately leave Julien with a single question. If I must constantly become someone else to succeed, where does my true self remain?
