Theodore Dreiser's An American Tragedy is a representative work of American naturalist literature that depicts how Clyde Griffith, a poor street boy, crumbles amidst wealth and class, love and desire. Clyde was not an evil person from the start. He was ashamed of his poverty, desired a better life, and wanted to enter a world to which he did not belong. However, as Roberta's pregnancy and the possibility of social advancement through Sondra clashed, Clyde began to imagine increasingly horrific choices. It remains unclear exactly what happened on the small boat on the lake until the very end. Did Clyde plan the murder from the beginning? Or did he cause an accident out of fear and impulse, and then choose not to save the dying Roberta? One thing is certain. He could have saved her, but he did not reach out a hand.
