Uganda Court Clears Way for Dr. Kizza Besigye's Treason Trial
Uganda's High Court has cleared the way for the treason trial of opposition politician Dr. Kizza Besigye and his co-accused after dismissing a defence application seeking to halt the proceedings. Justice Emmanuel Baguma ruled that allegations of human rights violations and unlawful abduction do not automatically bring criminal prosecutions to an end, describing the defence application as an abuse of the court process intended to delay the case. Dr. Besigye, Hajji Obeid Lutale, and UPDF Captain Denis Oola face joint charges of treason and misprision of treason. In this interview, we speak to Jude Byamukama, a constitutional lawyer based in Uganda.
