Why Does This Railway Bridge Go Nowhere?

Hidden between Brooklands and Timperley is one of Trafford's strangest railway mysteries. Known locally as "40 Steps Bridge", this unusual footbridge has appeared on maps for well over a century, crossing what was once the Manchester South Junction & Altrincham Railway and is now part of the Metrolink network. But there's one big question: Why was it built in the first place? In this video I explore historic photographs, old maps, railway history, semaphore signalling, the Bridgewater Canal, and the surviving trail that still leads to the bridge today. Along the way we uncover several clues—but no definitive answer. Was the bridge built to operate railway signals? To move goods between the canal and nearby fields? Or did it serve some completely forgotten purpose? Join me as we investigate one of Greater Manchester's most intriguing local mysteries.
