There was a time when you couldn’t walk through town in Britain without stopping every few yards to say hello to a neighbour. From the butcher who knew exactly what you liked to those Saturday morning trips to Woolworths, the high street was where the community actually lived. The rise of out of town shopping centres, retail parks and online giants didn’t happen by accident. It was the result of specific decisions that changed our towns forever.
