🚧 SOTERRAMIENTO A-5: AVANZA LA CONEXIÓN DE LOS NUEVOS TÚNELES | 18 MAYO 2026 🚧
#madrid #urbanmobility #sustainability #madridspain #madridcapital Another visit to the A-5 undergrounding works, and progress continues on all fronts, although we can see less and less from the surface. This is normal, as I mentioned some time ago. Nevertheless, we'll have the opportunity to see, to varying degrees, the progress at four key points, and I believe the main development is the future connection between the new and old tunnels, which run beneath Avenida de Portugal. The most interesting thing is that an excavator is already leveling the ground between the northern tunnels: the new one (the underground section) and the old one (which comes from the M-30 and Cuesta de San Vicente). It's working in an area near where the slab of the northern tunnel ends, and although they haven't made much progress yet, it gives us an interesting idea of how this work, which is the most complex part remaining, will be carried out. First the northern carriageway, then the southern one. We'll have to see what the traffic diversions and other details will be like. They've also poured concrete for a good portion of what I understand to be the foundation of the north wall, which will support the remaining slab. As I've mentioned before, the plan is to create a wall like the one on the south side, and on top of both will go the prefabricated concrete sections to roof the tunnel connection. They still need to pour the concrete for the upper part of the wall, but that's something they can do in a short time. They're still working on closing the three old underpasses, and there's a lot of progress on all of them, although the Batán one is the most visible. It won't be easy to film the progress on all of them, but I'll definitely try. The least visible one is the Boadilla Road underpass because there's no nearby spot to film from. But you can see walls to the north of the north tunnel, and I imagine they'll soon build the central and southern ones. We'll be able to see the underpass closure from the pedestrian bridge on the green cycling ring, that's for sure. The other tunnel that's progressing well is the one in Los Yébenes, with reinforcements in the northern section of the north tunnel. For now, it seems they haven't done anything to the south or in the center, where a wall will have to be built to divide the two tunnels. I don't think there will be any problems seeing how they close off that space, although the southern part will be difficult to see. And the one that looks the best, without a doubt, is the Batán tunnel, which has changed a lot in just one month. They're already pouring concrete for the central and southern walls, while the northern section is still unfinished, perhaps because it's still a vehicle entry and exit point. But it's clear that in June we'll see them start putting on the roof, and that will be a very significant change. By the way, there are some very striking curbs in the northern area, very close to Los Yébenes, and it seems clear that they will serve to delineate the surface lane at that point. For now, there's only that and the manhole cover areas, but the ground nearby is very smooth, very flat, and it seems we might see a concrete slab there soon, and asphalt before much longer. It's still early, but it seems like we're getting a glimpse of what I'm talking about. And in the area of the footbridge on the green ring, you can see stakes marking out that same lane. It wouldn't be surprising if we soon see curbs in that area too. Happy Monday!
