Two on one – #Tchaikovsky #Violin #Concerto – Two #soloists of two #generations (restricted)

Two soloists, worlds apart in a direct comparison of the first movement of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto (with some cuts). The older soloist, born in 1901 (d. 1987), shaped by the legendary teacher Leopold Auer, still belongs this old tradition—yet effectively defines the modern virtuoso ideal: absolute control and razor precision. His recording was made in 1955 for the film "Carnegie Hall" with the conductor Fritz Reiner. The younger soloist, born in 1974 (in a recording from 1990, with the conductor Pavel Kogan), by contrast, represents a fully developed high-virtuoso style displayed with an intensely tense bow. Here, virtuosity can become an event in itself—at times even detached from the piece—mirrored by flashes of sentimentality.
