Two readings, one lineage in this direct comparison of the first movement of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto. The older soloist, born in 1904 (d. 1992) in a studio recording from 1963 (with the conductor Walter Hendl), a pupil of Leopold Auer in Saint Petersburg, preserves the old tradition: a finely graded phrasing, and a sense that virtuosity always serves a musical purpose rather than dominating. The younger soloist, born in 1959 (in a London live recording from 1986, with Maxim Shostakovich, the composer's son), though two generations later, remains strikingly close to that same lineage. Trained at the Moscow Conservatory, she carries forward a similarly disciplined, unsentimental yet energetic clarity.
