Two on one – #Prokofiev #Violin #Concerto No1 – Two #soloists of two #generations

One concerto, two recordings, and two different worlds: Prokofiev’s first Violin Concerto, once performed in 1981 by a soloist born in 1945, with a conductor born in 1931 (d. 2018), once in 2013 by a soloist born in 1979. Nathan #Milstein (1904-1992) considered this concerto one of the greatest violin concertos ever written. The older interpretation feels exploratory, raw, and narrative-driven – shaped by a tradition still close to the work’s origins, when the concerto had not yet fully settled into the standard repertoire. The newer interpretation, by contrast, offers a refined, transparent, and effortlessly controlled approach that reflects how naturally this once-elusive piece now belongs to the canon.
