Today's topic will be two revolutions and two exhibitions. First, we will discuss the First Industrial Revolution, focusing on England, by examining the Royal Academy's biennial exhibition of 1781. Second, we will use the French Salon of 1787 to explore the pre-revolutionary climate, and then finally, we will trace the events that led to the end of the monarchy and the beginning of the French Republic. We will discuss: The English Salon of 1781, which will allow us to talk about Joshua Reynolds, Thomas Gainsborough, Joseph Wright of Derby, Josiah Wedgwood, John Flaxman, George Cruishank, Johann Zoffany, Gilbert Stuart, Benjamin West, and Henry Fuseli. The French Salon of 1787, depicted in the print by Pietro Antonio Marini, which introduces us to Elisabet Vigée Lebrun, Adelaïde Labille Guiard, Joseph Marie Vien, Hubert Robert, and Jacques Louis David.
