Emigrating to Vietnam in old age: What does a new beginning look like at 75 in Asia? We follow Mike, who turned his back on the Caribbean after decades in Barbados. The cost of living there kept rising, and Mike and his wife wanted to embark on a completely new chapter. In this documentary, he takes stock after 1.5 years in Da Nang. We clarify the hard facts: Why life here costs only half as much, what his initially skeptical wife thinks about Asia today, and why he consciously chose to live abroad without health insurance. Facts from this report: The last big move: After decades in Barbados, the cost of living rose noticeably. Mike wanted to see something new and convinced his initially skeptical wife to consider Vietnam. Today, she's thrilled with Da Nang, because life here costs her only half as much as in the Caribbean. Thailand was also ruled out as an alternative due to skyrocketing prices. Living without health insurance: An insurance policy after the age of 75 would be extremely expensive. Mike consciously takes the risk and pays his medical bills in Asia out of his own pocket. At a state-of-the-art private clinic in Da Nang, he recently paid just under €100 for a comprehensive professional checkup (X-ray, blood test, ultrasound, two doctors). The true cost of living in old age: Mike and his wife pay 18 million dong (€600.70 as of July 15, 2026) for a centrally located premium apartment (two bedrooms) in Da Nang – with no hidden additional costs. Their total monthly budget for a very comfortable life is less than US$2,000. Active at 75: No sign of loneliness. Mike plays pickleball several times a week (for less than €2), meets up with the international community, and recently completed a week-long solo motorcycle tour across Vietnam.
