"Death is not the end." A scene from "A Certain Magical Index" has been released, featuring a discussion scene featuring actual doctors, nurses, politicians, and actors discussing the current state of organ medical care in Japan! This is the latest work from director Naomi Kawase, known for "Sweet Bean," "Hikari," and "Asa ga Kuru." During the film, real doctors, including pediatricians and neurosurgeons, nurses, and interns, mingle with actors to discuss the current state of organ medical care in Japan and their views on the current system within hospitals. "The statements made by the people playing themselves are based on their own opinions. The lines that each person would say were only roughly written in the script, and I let them speak without being bound by that during the actual shoot," says director Kawase, reflecting on the filming, which recorded the actors' own words like a documentary. This discussion was attended by people from all walks of life in the field of organ transplantation, whom director Kawase met while researching for this film, and there was no telling who might speak. Director Kawase, who had interviewed each of them beforehand, was the only one who knew all of the opinions and positions of each participant. During the actual shoot, three cameras were running simultaneously, with real-time instructions given to each cameraman via intercom regarding which camera to point at whom, capturing the approximately three-hour discussion. One of the lines that Director Kawase was determined to include in the film was from a practicing doctor: "When I put ice into a beating heart and removed it, there was something indescribable." Hearing this directly from the doctor during the interview, he incorporated it into the script, and the line, "I realized that death isn't the end," in particular, was essential to the film. Also present in this scene was the father of the recipient (the patient receiving the organ transplant). Having the recipient's family and the donor's family present in the same venue was groundbreaking for the industry. It's rare for donors and recipients to meet face-to-face, either in Japan or overseas. While this is based on the need to avoid potential conflicts between the parties, some believe that if both parties agree, it may be acceptable for them to meet face-to-face. Director Kawase herself participated in a three-person talk session with the recipient and the donor's family at the 26th National Organ Transplant Promotion Conference held in 2025, something that had never been done before. While it may be gradual, the world's trends surrounding organ medicine are changing. "A Certain Magical Index" will be released on February 6, 2026.
