In 1813, Gioachino Rossini's opera Tancred premiered. One of the arias from it, Di tanti palpiti (Such a Strong Heartbeat), immediately became a hit. At that time, it was popular to make different kinds of "instrumental covers" of famous melodies. Yes, Paganini wrote his variations on this theme. After his death, the publishers learned how a virtuoso violinist could play this work: he used the technique of tuning the open strings of the violin (skordatura), raising each string by a semitone. Let’s say, E string would sound like F. This explanation does not really bring us even closer to the magic of the sound of the work.
