(5 Jan 1944) Various shots of Sherman tanks & infantry passing thru streets. Troops survey situation, move cautiously along streets. Burning Army van in field. GS tanks in town square. Wounded solider having attention to back. Infantry advancing, pass dead German. 6 pdr. firing in street of Ortona. GVs. of wrecked buildings, ruins etc. British troops sniping & firing Bren guns etc. "Ortona" sign riddled with bullets, new one replacing same. Engineers stopped by Italian farmer whose field is mined, clearing same. Sweeping lane thru 3 abreast. Mine - if you lift it explodes, so string is attached to same, sappers then then get at safe distance, pulling cord, mine explodes. Various shots of Italian population being evacuated, carrying their belongings on their heads. Transported by military vans. Refugees standing round fire.
