Battle of Posada (1330) - Wallachia defeat Hungary and became independent
The Battle of Posada, fought from November 9 to 12, 1330, was a decisive clash between Basarab I, voivode of Wallachia, and Charles I of Hungary. Emerging as a new Romanian principality south of the Carpathians, Wallachia had long been under Hungarian overlordship, but growing tensions and Basarab's refusal to pay tribute pushed Charles to invade with a massive royal army. Lured into a narrow mountain gorge, the Hungarian forces were ambushed and crushed by Wallachian fighters using guerrilla tactics, arrows, and rockslides. Charles barely escaped with his life. The Wallachian victory marked the effective birth of an independent Wallachia, making it the first fully independent Romanian principality in history.
