Pyrrhic War (280–275 BC) – short documentary

The Pyrrhic War was a series of battles fought between 280 and 275 BC, involving the Roman Republic and Pyrrhus, the king of Epirus. Pyrrhus was asked by the people of Tarentum, a Greek city in southern Italy, to help them fight against the Romans. Pyrrhus, a skilled commander, won initial battles against the Roman legions with his strong army and war elephants, but suffered heavy losses. He couldn't recover these losses due to Epirus' limited resources, while the Romans had a large pool of military manpower. Pyrrhus eventually moved his army to Sicily to fight against the Carthaginians, but returned to Italy in 275 BC, where the last battle of the war was fought, ending in Roman victory. Pyrrhus then returned to Epirus, ending the war. This war marked the first time Rome confronted professional mercenary armies of the Hellenistic states, and Rome's victory drew attention to its emerging power. After the war, Rome asserted its dominance over southern Italy.
